IHA Information – re: Grad Campout
On Saturday, September 12th, a large group of people gathered on the Bombi for a student-organized “grad” event. This annual gathering is not condoned, supported or publicized by Stanley Humphries Secondary School, especially at a time where social gatherings pose a higher than usual level of concern. However, many students from our school chose to attend. If your child participated in this event, please read the bulletin below.
Consult our Parent Handbook to see changes related to this year’s plans.
Daily Health Check:
Daily Health Checks are one of the important ways in which we can prevent the spread of the virus and keep each other safe. Thank you, parents, for monitoring your child’s health by using this tool!
Click here to access the udated daily health check questionnaire. This will help you determine if your child should be at school or if you should be contacting 811 to set up a COVID screening test.

Welcome back to SHSS!
We are so excited to welcome our students back and seeing how much everyone has grown. We have really missed seeing our learners in the building. While school will look a little different this year, we are up for the challenge and we are here to help families navigate this new reality.
This time at school will serve a few purposes. Students will have the chance to meet their teachers and see their classrooms, go over our Covid protocols to ensure safety and ask any questions they have about the upcoming year.
A detailed safety orientation will be done by classroom teachers, administrators and bus drivers to go over the following:
Students will wait outside until the beginning of the session and then enter the school through the cafeteria entrance. Teachers will meet them there and help them find their A block classes. While reusable, fabric masks will be issued to students during the orientation, we ask that students bring a mask from home if possible for the initial meeting.
Please note that we will not be able to provide busing on this day.
Timetables have now been posted to the MyEdBC family portal. Click here to access the portal.
To see your child’s timetable, click on the above link, log on using your Username (parent name with no spaces, all lowercase) and the Password you created. If you get a message that it has expired, click on OK and follow the prompts to create a new one. We can help you to reset your password if needed.
Once you are in the portal, you can view the timetable by going to the Family top tab, clicking on your child’s name and then clicking on Schedule on the left side tab.
If you click on the “Matrix view” on the top left and use the dropdown menu to go to Q1, you will see what 2 blocks students have in the first term. If you click on “List view” on the top left, you will see what classes have been timetabled for each quarter.
Teachers will go over timetables with students at the orientation and will be able to answer any questions that come up. Questions can also be directed to our grade 8,9,10 counsellor, Mr. Prong (email@example.com) or to Ms. Jackie (firstname.lastname@example.org) for grade 11 or 12.
If you are having trouble accessing the portal or your account, click here to find out more. Also, our office is open from 7:00 to 3:00. Please call (250) 365-7735 if you need assistance.
Parents and Visitors:
Due to our increased safety protocols, we are asking that parents or visitors to the school come into the building by appointment only. Facemasks are to be worn in common areas such as the office or hallways.
If you would like to meet with a member of our admin or counselling team, please call our office (250)365-7735 or send us an email to set up a time.

We are happy to set up a meeting but are working to manage the flow of traffic in the office and hallways at this time. Please don’t hesitate to connect with us.
If last year taught us anything, it’s that we can get through challenges! It will be an interesting year and we will work hard as a learning community to make sure that everyone is safe, learning and happy at SHSS!
Monday, August 31st
Dear SHSS Families,
We are so happy to be welcoming students back to school for 2020-2021! We are moving into the new year with optimism and enthusiasm but we know that there are many doubts and questions that make our return to school feel very different from other Septembers. Many changes and adjustments have been made to reflect the new reality in which we find ourselves.
We are working hard with our district and our staff to make sure that our start up process sets students up for a successful, enjoyable and safe year. To help you understand the SHSS landscape for our new year, I am sending some information about our school’s organization and our start up, which are both quite different this year.
Please have a look through the following information:
*Please note that busing will not be provided to the orientation days
More detailed and specific information will be headed your way this week but do not hesitate to contact the school if you have concerns you would like addressed. As always, we are here to answer your questions.
Terry Jones and I are here to support you and your students as we navigate this new landscape. SHSS is a strong and positive learning community. With open communication and support for each other, we know we can make this year a successful one for all learners. We look forward to seeing our students back and to welcoming our grade 8 cohort as they begin their high school journey!
